Diet is Everything – The Best Foods to Prevent the Worst Diseases

September 30, 2012

Grilled salmon and vegetablesAlthough the environment, stress, and genetics all play key factors in determining our longevity, the maxim “you are what you eat” cannot be ignored. This is more than just food for thought; by realising the power that certain substances contain, you can potentially stave off some of the worst afflictions possible. Read on a bit further; what you find may surprise you.

Cancer

Although you may not realise it, studies have shown that up to 40% of all cancers are caused by dietary factors. One of the best kept secrets here is that one of the easiest ways to stave off cancer is by consuming plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. You may not be surprised at this, but you may be interested to learn that certain fruits are better at preventing cancer than others. For instance, did you know that strawberries and apples contain substances known as flavinoids that have been shown to reduce the reproduction of cancerous cells? Indeed, an apple a day may keep the doctor away!

Circulatory Disease

One of the best foods to help lessen the chances of circulatory disease is garlic. Although it may offend the nose, it helps lower cholesterol and decrease blood pressure, which the heart loves. Additionally, orange juice can help prevent more than the common cold. Oranges contain substances called bioflavinoids which help strengthen capillaries and prevent plaque buildup within the arteries. Even nuts and legumes are helpful, as they contain B-complex vitamins which help promote circulation to your extremities.

Arthritis

You are never too young to worry about arthritis. Many of the foods you eat now may help directly determine whether you will suffer from this painful malady later in life. One of the best foods to help prevent this disease is fatty fish such as salmon. These fish contain Omega-3 fatty acids that help prevent the spread of inflammation as well as inhibit the enzymes that trigger swelling. Extra virgin oil is another great preventative measure, as it contains a substance called oleocanthol which also blocks inflammatory enzyme production.

These are examples of just a few foods that you probably already enjoy as tasty treats. By realising the benefits they can provide along with regular exercise, you can help avoid these diseases while adding a bit of extra “flavour” to your life.

This is a good one – hardly anyone knows how to eat right with these big illnesses in mind. A big one is to eat Cruciferous (kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, turnips etc) with every meal to maximise your intake of vitaminsa nd antioxidants!!
